Amphotericin B is one of the earliest compounds designed to kill fungi. It acts by forming channels in fungal membranes, causing the cells to become leaky. It is, of course, toxic to eukaryotic cells in culture. Thus, very low doses are recommended. The usual therapeutic concentration in media ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 µg/mL. High concentrations of Amphotericin B solution are not recommended for routine prophylactic use.
