Stem cells are the least differentiated of all cell types. Many
biomolecules common in sera can trigger unwanted differentiation.
As such, these cells have uniquely pristine requirements for
growth in culture. Our stem cell qualified fetal bovine serum has
been specifically tested for its ability to sustain the
undifferentiated cellular morphology of these cells. This quality
product comes exclusively from US sources.

Chrysalis ™ insect cell qualified fetal bovine serum is
pre-screened for use with both Grace’s and TNM-FH insect media on
a broad range of insect cells, including Sf9, Tni and D2 cells.

AbSolute ™ low-IgG fetal bovine serum is selected from lots with
naturally low amounts of IgG. IgG is the major immunoglobulin
found in normal animal serum, accounting for 70-75% of the total
pool. It is a natural serum component involved in immune function
and the only class of immunoglobulins able to cross the placenta.
Natural bovine serum IgG can interfere with cell culture studies
in which the cells may be producing a specific IgG molecule of
interest. Gemini never uses artificial methods to remove IgG from
bovine serum, as these treatments may interfere with culture
performance.
Gemini offers charcoal:dextran stripped fetal bovine serum for
researchers requiring low levels of certain steroid hormones.
Charcoal:dextran stripping reduces the serum concentration of
many hormones and certain growth factors, such as estradiol,
cortisol, corticosterone, the B vitamins,T3, T4 and
prostaglandins. Post-strip assay results are reported. This serum
is useful where these endogenous molecules may interfere with
experimental work. This serum may show some reduced
growth-promotion ability for cells requiring the stripped
compounds.
Dialysis removes many small molecules from FBS such as glucose,
salts and some non-protein bound serum molecules. This process
generally does not remove hormones that are serum bound but it
may reduce growth promotion capabilities for some cell types. The
dialysis process is done by ultra filtration with a 10,000
molecular weight cut-off membrane. The serum is processed at 4°C
with a careful monitoring of pH, osmolality and glucose
concentration.

Gamma irradiation is an effective means for inactivating the
broadest range of viruses and mycoplasmas in fetal bovine serum.
However, ionizing radiation may also damage essential growth
factors in serum, so one might expect treated sera to exhibit
reduced performance in cell cullture.
